occasions, because the wind was blowing towards Etna\u2019s southern and south-eastern sectors, the ash was carried towards the Catania area, also causing temporary restrictions on operations at Catania-Fontanarossa International Airport.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>However, the presence of ash at the summit of Etna does not automatically mean that the volcano is producing a major eruption, or that all excursions have to be cancelled.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>Etna is an active volcano that is constantly changing. For this reason its activity is monitored continuously, and access to the different altitudes is assessed on the basis of volcanic and weather conditions and of the regulations issued by the competent authorities.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-is-etna-emitting-ash\">Why is Etna emitting ash?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>The current ash emissions of the emissions can vary over the course of the day, and moments dominated by degassing may alternate with others in which volcanic gases and fine ash are emitted at the same time.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-etnas-ash-emissions-dangerous\">Are Etna\u2019s ash emissions dangerous?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>When talking about an active volcano, it is always important to avoid absolute judgements.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>The emissions observed during this period have generally consisted of fine, diluted ash, without necessarily being associated with strong explosive activity.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>This does not mean, however, that Etna\u2019s activity should be underestimated.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>Volcanic activity can change over time, and that is precisely why Etna is constantly monitored by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology \u2013 Etna Observatory (INGV-OE) through seismic, geochemical, geodetic, thermal and visual monitoring systems.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>For anyone visiting the volcano, it is therefore important to distinguish between what is observed at a given moment and the conditions that could develop afterwards.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>Excursions take place in accessible areas and are modified if volcanic or weather conditions, or the regulations in force, make it necessary.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"etnas-ash-and-catania-airport-why-can-flights-be-suspended\">Etna\u2019s ash and Catania airport: why can flights be suspended?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>One of the most visible effects of ash emissions concerns air traffic.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>Very fine volcanic ash can be carried by the wind for many kilometres and, when it is pushed south or south-east, it can affect the airspace used by Catania Airport.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>On 14 and 15 September 2026, for example, the emission of ash from Etna and its dispersal towards Catania\u2019s airspace led to the temporary closure of some sectors and the resulting suspension of part of the flight operations.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>It is important to understand that a problem for air traffic does not necessarily mean that a powerful eruption is under way on the volcano.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>The consequences for the airport in fact depend on a number of factors:<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the amount of ash emitted;<\/li>\n<li>the size of the particles;<\/li>\n<li>the height reached by the plume;<\/li>\n<li>the direction of the wind;<\/li>\n<li>the strength of the wind;<\/li>\n<li>the position of the cloud in relation to flight routes and the airport airspace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>Even a relatively modest amount of ash, if carried towards the airport, can therefore lead to precautionary procedures being applied.<\/pee><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><pee>Conversely, more visible volcanic activity might not directly affect the airport if the wind carries the material in another direction.<\/pee><!--
