The starting point is Piano Provenzana at 1,800 meters<\/strong>, on the northern slope of Mount Etna<\/strong>. From there, the route leads to the Monte Nero trail<\/strong>, built along the eruptive fracture of October 27, 2002<\/strong>, which destroyed the tourist area of Piano Provenzana, and crosses lava flows from the 1923 eruption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After crossing the lava fields, we\u2019ll enter the magnificent beech forest of Timpa Rossa<\/strong>, where we\u2019ll stop at the Timpa Rossa mountain hut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Past the hut, we\u2019ll hike over lava flows from both recent eruptions<\/strong>, such as the one from February\u2013March 1947<\/strong>, and older flows<\/strong> dating back to 1614\u20131624<\/strong>. Here, you\u2019ll see spectacular volcanic morphologies, such as pahoehoe lava<\/strong> (a Hawaiian term), with smooth, rope-like surfaces, and fascinating globular formations<\/strong> called \u201cMonti dei Morti<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

These lava structures are also known as “Dammusi<\/strong>,” an Arabic term meaning ceiling or cover<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At an altitude of 2,030 meters<\/strong>, we will reach the Grotta del Gelo<\/strong>, where we\u2019ll step inside to admire its size, beauty, and above all, the permanent ice<\/strong> that fills the cave year-round\u2014sometimes forming true stalactites and stalagmites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The return will follow the same trail back to Piano Provenzana<\/strong>, unless the guide evaluates an alternative ending at Rifugio Ragabo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
