In Spring and Autumn | North Side

85€ Adults | 75€ Under 12 years old

Excursion Description

Departures scheduled every day from Piano Provenzana (Etna North) at 8:30 AM.

The alternative excursion to the Summit Craters from Etna North, available in the autumn months, includes an ascent by off-road vehicle up to an altitude of 2450 meters. This is because, at higher altitudes, the road that allows vehicles to climb further is already covered with snow and ice.

The Volcanological Guide will lead the group to the Monte Pizzillo Crater at an altitude of 2500 meters. Afterwards, crossing the 1614/24 lava flows and the 1809 Craters, you will reach the 1947 fracture where you will visit lava flow channels (using protective helmets ⛑). During the excursion, you will see the craters from the following eruptions: 1614/24, 1809, 1874, 1879, 1911, 1923, 1974/75, and 2002 (the last eruption that destroyed the tourist station of Piano Provenzana).

❄️ Notice: The route may undergo variations in the presence of abundant snow on the ground or ice that may block cavities and lava caves, preventing their access and making it necessary to adapt the itinerary for safety reasons. The passage near any craters may also be subject to modifications; therefore, the trail cannot be identical to the one used during the summer period.

Important Warnings

  • The trek is not recommended for those who do not exercise regularly.
  • The excursion requires good physical preparation; since it is a high-altitude trail, it will be easy to experience symptoms of fatigue.
  • Caution is required as it is volcanic terrain, which is often loose and unstable.
  • The excursion may undergo variations at the discretion of the Guides, or be interrupted if environmental, weather, or volcanic conditions change.
  • The total duration of the trek will depend on the pace. The excursion will be carried out within the limits set by the ordinances in force.
  • Also suitable for children over 6 years of age.
  • The trail involves climbing and passing along crater rims; this could cause vertigo problems for sensitive individuals.
  • Strongly discouraged for those suffering from cardiovascular, respiratory, or hypertension problems.
  • We do not recommend the use of contact lenses due to the gases exhaled by the volcano and the volcanic ash.
  • Pregnant women past their third month of pregnancy are not allowed to participate in any hiking activity.
  • It is good practice to perfectly know your health conditions and eventually point them out to the Guide to avoid taking any risks.
