Trekking to the Summit Craters
Ascent by 4x4 from Piano Provenzana to 2825m. From here, a 5km trek (490m elevation gain) will take us to the edge of the Central Crater at 3315m. We will admire the grandeur of the volcanic environment and the view from the roof of Sicily.
The long descent of 1500m in negative elevation is challenging and not recommended for those with knee problems. The route winds through volcanic sand channels back to Piano Provenzana.

Detailed Schedule
- 7:30 AM: Meeting at Piano Provenzana (1800m).
- 8:00/8:15 AM: Departure and ascent by 4x4 to 2825m.
- ~9:00 AM: Start of the 5km trek to the Summit Craters.
- ~11:30 AM: Arrival at the summit (3315m) and break.
- ~12:30 PM: Start of the long descent on foot (7km).
- ~2:00/2:30 PM: Expected return to Piano Provenzana.

- Physical Effort: Requires good physical condition. Not recommended for those who do not exercise regularly.
- Challenging Descent: Strongly not recommended ⚠️ for those with joint problems, especially knees.

- No Contact Lenses: Ash and gases can cause irritation.

In case of adverse weather, the excursion may be canceled or postponed. You will be notified as soon as possible.
Payment is made on the day of the excursion directly to the guide. No advance payment is required (except for agencies or groups).
In case of many requests, participants will be divided into smaller groups with different guides.
We did this trip with Domenico and Nikos on Sept. 15th 2023. This was a wonderful experience and we therefore highly recommend this excursion. Nikos was our guide and was professional all along the way, delivering interesting information and demonstrating his passion about vulcanology. He also took care about a group member who was physically not fit enough for this trip. Good job and a lot of fun!
