The Itinerary

Trekking on Etna towards 3000 M

The excursion starts from Bar Esagonal at 1,900 meters. After meeting the guide, you will take the Etna Cable Car up to 2,500 meters.

Here, the real trekking begins with a 500-meter ascent, crossing recent lava flows covered in snow, large craters, lava channels, and hot fumaroles.

We will reach 3000 meters (maximum altitude depends on volcanic risk levels) at the base of the Southeast Crater, the most active on Etna. The descent will be on foot back to the cable car for the return trip.

08:30 - Meeting

Parking in front of BAR ESAGONAL (Rifugio Sapienza).

Ticket & Departure

Payment of Cable Car tickets and ascent to 2500m.

Trekking

Ascent up to 3000m (Southeast Crater Base) and fumarole visit.

13:30 - Return

Descent on foot to the cable car and return to the square.

Snow Chains/Tires Mandatory: Snow chains on board or winter tires are mandatory to reach Rifugio Sapienza in winter months.

Important Warnings

  • Physical Difficulty: Not recommended for those with little physical activity. The volcanic ground is incoherent and unstable.
  • Health: Not suitable for those suffering from cardiovascular, respiratory pathologies or hypertension.
  • Vertigo: The route along crater rims may cause vertigo in sensitive subjects.
  • Pregnancy: Prohibited for pregnant women past the 3rd month.
  • Contact Lenses: Not recommended due to volcanic gases and ash.
  • Age: Suitable for children only over 10/11 years old accustomed to walking.
