Itinerary
The excursion begins at the square in front of Rifugio Citelli, situated at an altitude of 1,740m.
The initial stretch of the trail winds through a stunning forest featuring unique botanical species, most notably the Etna Birch (Betula aetnensis), a rare tree endemic to this volcano. As you walk, the dense vegetation is occasionally carved by natural gullies formed by seasonal snowmelt.
After approximately 1.5 km, we reach a valley that hides the entrance to the Serracozzo Cave (1,851m)—a fascinating lava tube formed during the eruption of 1971.
From here, the trail climbs steadily toward the Serracozzo Belvedere (2,100m). This spectacular panoramic viewpoint offers breathtaking views over the vast Valle del Bove and the towering summit craters.
The return journey takes us on a fun, rapid descent through volcanic ash slopes and sandy gullies, leading us directly back to our starting point

Plan a Safe and Comfortable Excursion
When planning a hike, it’s essential to be well-prepared to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here’s a list of recommended items to bring, with particular attention to the top five essentials:
1. Layered Clothing
Wearing layers is key to adapting to temperature changes during the hike. A short-sleeved shirt, a long-sleeved thermal shirt, and a fleece or sweatshirt will help you regulate body temperature based on weather conditions.
2. Hiking Boots
A good pair of hiking boots is crucial for your safety and comfort. They offer support and grip, reducing the risk of injury on uneven terrain.
3. Windbreaker or Down Jacket
Choosing the right jacket to protect you from wind or cold is vital. Depending on the season, a light windbreaker or a heavier down jacket can make all the difference in staying warm and dry.
4. Water – Minimum 1 Liter per Person
Staying hydrated is essential during any physical activity. Be sure to bring at least 1 liter of water per person to avoid dehydration and maintain your energy.
5. Gloves or Hat
Especially in winter, spring, and autumn, gloves and a hat are essential to keep warm. These accessories help retain body heat and protect you from the cold.
Additional Recommended Items:
Snacks – To recharge your energy during the hike
Trekking poles – Useful for better balance and stability
25/30 L backpack – To carry all your essentials comfortably
Sunglasses – To protect your eyes from UV rays
Sunscreen / Lip balm – Essential to protect your skin and lips
